KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Airlines has partnered with Indian cricket giants Mumbai Indians in a move aimed at boosting its presence in India and across South Asia.

In a statement, the national carrier said the collaboration “brings together two global brands united by belief, performance, and purpose”, linking Malaysia Airlines with an estimated 2.5 billion cricket fans worldwide.

The partnership is expected to tap into cricket’s immense cultural relevance and the passion it commands across generations.

“Partnering with Mumbai Indians aligns with our strategic focus on strengthening our presence in India and South Asia, while continuing to enhance our brand footprint across Southeast Asia,” Malaysia Airlines said.

The airline added that the collaboration will help connect cultures, strengthen tourism, and reinforce its position as a preferred carrier for travellers, creating lasting value through purpose-driven partnerships.

Previously, when Malaysia Airlines posted teaser announcements on X, many fans speculated that the posts were linked to English Premier League club Chelsea FC.

This was largely due to the airline’s use of the term “The Blues”, a nickname commonly associated with Chelsea.

The latest announcement, however, left many Malaysian Chelsea supporters disappointed, as they had hoped to see Malaysia Airlines appear as the club’s main shirt sponsor this season, with Chelsea currently without a principal sponsor.

Mumbai Indians are one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), having won the tournament a record five times.

Known for their star-studded line-up and strong squad depth, the team has featured top international and Indian players such as Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav.

The franchise has built a reputation for consistency, resilience, and developing world-class cricketing talent, making it a formidable presence both on and off the field. — January 14, 2026
