Malaysia and WHO enhance collaboration on infectious disease preparedness, focusing on early warning systems and global health negotiations.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the World Health Organisation are strengthening cooperation to bolster the country’s preparedness against infectious disease threats.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said this collaboration focuses on enhancing early warning systems and healthcare system resilience.

Key global negotiations are advancing this effort, including the Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing mechanism and amendments to the International Health Regulations.

The development of a Pandemic Agreement is also part of these crucial international discussions.

“Our focus is on safeguarding lives, and this cooperation with WHO aims to enhance early warning systems,” Dzulkefly said in a statement.

He added that improved capacity to detect and respond to crises can minimise disruptions to the economy and daily life.

The minister earlier accompanied WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on a courtesy call to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Dzulkefly said the meeting reflected close global health diplomacy between Malaysia and the WHO.

Dr Tedros expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s active role in addressing international health issues during the discussion.

“Malaysia’s active participation at the international level ensures that national health priorities continue to be represented at the global negotiating table,” Dzulkefly stated.

He reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to maintaining an inclusive, high-standard healthcare system.

The country remains prepared to face ongoing and future global health challenges, according to the minister.
