The youth and sports ministry awaits a full post-mortem on Malaysia’s Thomas and Uber Cup performance to identify weaknesses

TAIPING: The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is awaiting the full post-mortem report on the national badminton squad’s performance at the 2026 Thomas Cup and Uber Cup to identify weaknesses that need immediate improvement.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the findings of the evaluation will serve as key indicators and guidelines for the ministry and the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in formulating more effective athlete development strategies in the future.

He also expressed his optimism about the national players’ efforts at the event, even though the teams’ overall performance fell short of expectations.

“We will ensure that their development continues, and we will always engage with BAM to ensure performance continues to improve. Any shortcomings must be addressed immediately.

“So we will work closely and hold discussions with BAM regarding the continuous development of our badminton athletes,” he told reporters after officiating the Malaysia International Muay Championship 2026 (MIMAC 3.0) here tonight.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq said the post-mortem report will serve as an indicator and guideline to ensure that national badminton players can continue improving their performance.

In the 2026 Thomas Cup campaign, Malaysia finished as Group B runners-up and lost 0-3 to defending champions China in the quarter-finals.

Malaysia’s run in the 2026 Uber Cup Finals also ended in the quarter-finals after being eliminated by defending champions China with a 0-3 defeat.
