This strategic benchmark was recently highlighted by Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Chairman of Cypark Resources & Bursa Malaysia, during the 2nd Wisdom Malaysia Conference (WMC) 2026. The calculation aligns with Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim's overarching MADANI Economy, which targets elevating Malaysia into the top 30 global economies within a 10-year timeline. Current standing Malaysia sits at 35th place globally in economic size. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) currently holds the 30th position. The UAE's economy is roughly 20% larger than Malaysia. Malaysia Required Growth Milestones, and for that Tan Sri Wahid (right) strongly stressed, “We must consistently close the 20% gap with the 30th spot.” Pix: Dr. Zul

Tan Sri Wahid said, “The challenge because the countries ahead of Malaysia are not standing still and will continue expanding, Malaysia cannot rely on baseline performance. Emerging peers like Bangladesh and the Philippines are also growing aggressively. To consistently close the 20% gap with the 30th spot, Malaysia must sustain a specific dual-track momentum by maintaining an annual nominal gross national product (GDP) growth of about 7%. Malaysia has to translate that nominal target into real growth rate of at least 5.5% to 6%, outpacing our country's past historic baseline of 4% to 5%. Malaysia is showing strong momentum, with its economy expanding by 5.7% in Q2. So, to become number 30 or better, we have to outpace the growth of other countries.”

I agree with Tan Sri Wahid that achieving a continuous 2% global advantage requires aggressive economic restructuring. The government has to push several crucial components: Attracting High-Value Investments by aggressively capturing foreign direct investment (FDI) and domestic direct investment (DDI) focused on digital technology, green energy & high-tech manufacturing. Moving Up the Value Chain by increasing economic complexity rather than relying on raw commodities or low-cost assembly. Regional Integration by enhancing swift cross-border trade diplomacy within ASEAN to secure supply chains. I understand Vietnam & Indonesia present fierce regional competition, as both are expanding aggressively and threatening to outpace Malaysia's economic ranking.
