Malaysia domestic travel is showing stronger momentum around the Merdeka and Malaysia Day period, with more Malaysians looking beyond familiar urban destinations for their next local trip.

Airbnb data shows domestic accommodation searches by Malaysian guests for stays between 25 August and 25 September 2026 rose nearly 20% year-on-year. Nights booked in non-urban destinations grew by close to 25% over the same period.

The trend points to a wider shift in local tourism. Travellers are not only taking domestic trips, but spreading their spending across smaller towns and communities.

Malaysians Look Beyond Familiar Destinations

Several destinations recorded notable growth in searches for the Merdeka-Malaysia Day period.

Kuala Terengganu saw searches by Malaysian guests rise by more than 40%, according to Airbnb. Port Dickson recorded growth of more than 40%, while searches for Ulu Langat increased by more than 30%.

First-time Airbnb users are also exploring a broader range of places. Port Dickson, Kluang, Ulu Langat and Gombak were among destinations recording the strongest growth in bookings from first-time users.

This matters for the domestic tourism economy because visitor activity can reach businesses outside Malaysia’s traditional tourism centres. Restaurants, cafés, shops, attractions and transport providers can all benefit when travellers spend more time exploring locally.

Local Recommendations Help Spread Tourism Spending

Where visitors spend their money after arriving is another part of the picture.

Airbnb’s Beyond the Beaten Track: Unlocking Tourism Growth Across Asia Pacific report found that about 83% of surveyed Malaysian guests received recommendations from their hosts. Nearly all of those travellers said the suggestions influenced where they spent locally.

More than 2,000 Malaysian Airbnb hosts have also created Guidebook recommendations for guests. Food spots and restaurants form the largest category, followed by shopping, nature and parks, as well as cafés and bakeries.

For smaller operators, this type of recommendation can provide valuable exposure without requiring them to be located in a major tourism district.

Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb’s Country Head for India and Southeast Asia, said the national celebrations give Malaysians an opportunity to rediscover the country’s range of destinations. He also highlighted the role hosts can play in connecting visitors with local communities and businesses.

Domestic Tourism Supports Malaysia’s Local Economy

The growth comes at a time when domestic tourism spending is already making a sizeable economic contribution.

According to Department of Statistics Malaysia figures cited in the release, domestic tourism expenditure reached RM34 billion in the first quarter of 2026, representing a 15.8% increase year-on-year. Shopping accounted for the largest share of domestic tourism expenditure in 2025, while food and beverages were also major spending areas.

That makes the rise of non-urban travel particularly relevant. When visitors move beyond major city centres, part of that spending has the potential to reach independent eateries, neighbourhood retailers and community-based tourism operators.

For Malaysia, encouraging visitors to explore a wider geographical area could also help distribute tourism activity more evenly.

Hosting Creates Opportunities for Local Communities

The host economy is developing alongside travel demand. Nearly one in five active Malaysian Airbnb hosts held Superhost status as of 30 June 2026, according to company data.

In Langkawi, host Lis said hosting provides an additional source of income while giving her an opportunity to introduce visitors to places that residents know and enjoy.

Her experience reflects how accommodation can connect with the wider local economy. Guests looking for somewhere to eat or something to do may be directed towards smaller businesses that do not always appear on mainstream tourist itineraries.

The press material also highlights rural stays such as Rumah Uda in Langkawi, Sekebun Bunga in Batang Kali and Kebun Lisdtari in Langkawi. These properties connect visitors with kampung environments, local crafts, farms, food businesses and nearby attractions.

What the Travel Shift Could Mean for Malaysia

The wider impact of Malaysia domestic travel goes beyond accommodation bookings.

Stronger interest in smaller destinations can create opportunities for local food businesses, tourism operators, craftspeople and other service providers. It can also encourage communities to preserve experiences that give each destination its own identity.

There is a regional development angle too. Tourism concentrated in a few established areas can limit who benefits from visitor spending. A broader spread of travellers gives smaller communities a better chance to participate in the tourism economy.

The Merdeka-Malaysia Day period offers an early indication of that shift. If domestic travellers continue exploring beyond major cities, local tourism could become a stronger channel for supporting community businesses while encouraging Malaysians to discover more of their own country.
