PHNOM PENH: Malaysia recorded their worst-ever performance in the history of the SEA Games by finishing in seventh position and failing to meet their 40-gold target in Cambodia last night.
With all competitions completed, Malaysia’s medal haul of 34 golds, 45 silvers and 97 bronzes was worse than in the last games held in Hanoi, Vietnam last year, when Malaysia finished sixth.
Malaysia also finished sixth in Singapore in 1983.
In the Phnom Penh games, Malaysia, represented by 676 athletes, fell behind countries like Singapore, the Philippines and hosts Cambodia, and was ahead only of Myanmar, Laos, Brunei and Timor Leste.

In final action yesterday, Malaysia added four more gold medals through Sam Jee Lek (dance sport), the men’s and women’s hockey teams, and Ahmad Nor Iman Hakim Rakib (kickboxing).
The closing ceremony will be held today.
