The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, is an international multi-sport event bringing together athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, predominantly comprised of territories once part of the British Empire.

@NewsBFM reported that the Games are currently without a host following the withdrawal of the Australian state of Victoria over cost concerns. Reports suggest that Malaysia has been offered the opportunity to step in as the new host.

According to RNZ reports, the Olympic Council of Malaysia has indicated that the offer includes a significant financial investment of over $200 million (RM600 million) to support Malaysia in hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) faced challenges in securing a host for the 2026 Games until Victoria stepped forward in April 2022.

Initially, organisers projected the event, spanning various cities such as Geelong, Bendigo, and Ballarat, to incur expenses totalling $2.8 billion. However, the anticipated cost for the 12-day tournament surged to over $6 billion, leading the state to abandon its hosting plans.

It was also reported that Malaysia previously hosted the Games in its capital, Kuala Lumpur, back in 1998. Mohamad Norza Zakaria, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of Malaysia, urged the government to take the “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity.

“OCM says the government should consider this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, believing that it would build on Malaysia’s past success of hosting the Games in 1998, and elevate Malaysian sports standards.”
