Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia and Myanmar have agreed on follow-up actions from bilateral talks, including addressing the refugee issue.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Myanmar agree that relevant ministries and agencies need to take coordinated and proactive action to advance bilateral cooperation, including efforts to address the issue of Myanmar refugees in Malaysia.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was emphasised during his meeting and bilateral talks with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing today.

He said following their joint press conference, he and Min Aung Hlaing attended the Malaysia-Myanmar Cooperation Dialogue at Kompleks Seri Perdana, organised by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia.

He said the dialogue complemented efforts to strengthen understanding between Malaysia and Myanmar through the participation of academics, scholars, think tanks and business communities from both countries.

“I stressed that everything discussed during the one-to-one meeting and bilateral talks must be followed up with concrete action,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Anwar said the government supported the dialogue initiative and encouraged broader participation by academic institutions and the business community so that the discussions could be translated into cooperation that directly benefited the people.

“I believe open dialogue and committed follow-up will strengthen trust between Malaysia and Myanmar, while paving the way to resolve outstanding issues and expand cooperation that brings tangible benefits to Malaysians,” he said.

Min Aung Hlaing departed for home today after concluding his two-day official visit to Malaysia, which began yesterday.
