DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on Malaysians to unite in full support of the nation’s two badminton pairs competing in the finals of the 2025 BWF World Championships in Paris on Saturday — a date that coincides with Malaysia’s National Day.
Extending his heartfelt congratulations, Zahid said the achievements of women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, as well as mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, were a source of national pride.
“Congratulations to Pearly-Thinaah for making history as the first Malaysian women’s pair to reach a World Championship final, and to the strong partnership of Tang Jie and Ee Wei, who also advanced in style,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
“Their presence on this prestigious stage, right on our National Day, is a truly meaningful gift to our beloved country.”
Ahmad Zahid urged Malaysians across the nation to continue offering their prayers and encouragement, expressing hope that both pairs would deliver a historic win for the country.
“Let us raise the spirit of Merdeka on the world stage. Show the true Malaysian spirit — remain united and cheer them on,” he added.
In tonight’s championship matches, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei are set to face China’s Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin at 7pm (Malaysian time), while world number two Pearly-Thinaah will go up against the top-seeded Chinese duo Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning at 8.40pm. - August 31, 2025
