KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia is prepared to host negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia in response to renewed tensions along their shared border, with the aim of maintaining the ceasefire previously agreed upon by both nations.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed that discussions are expected to take place soon following talks with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Malaysia is ready to act as a facilitator to help both parties reach a peaceful resolution, Bernama reported.
“If possible, we would like to hold the talks here in Malaysia as there is a lack of trust between both countries,” he explained.
“They have contacted us; Cambodia has requested that the discussions be held in Kuala Lumpur, and Thailand has asked for our continued efforts to sustain the ceasefire. We are deeply saddened and disappointed by the situation.”
He added that despite the optimism following the signing of the peace agreement between Cambodian and Thai leaders during the 47th ASEAN Summit, tensions at the border have escalated.
Following a recent incident in which a Thai soldier was injured after stepping on a landmine along the border, Thailand suspended the ceasefire. The landmine was allegedly planted by Cambodian forces.
“However, Asean monitoring teams in both countries have reported that this was a new landmine,” said Mohamad, who also expressed hope for de-escalation following his recent phone conversation with Thailand’s Foreign Minister. “I urge both sides to remain calm and continue discussions to maintain peace.”
Mohamad, who is also the Member of Parliament for Rembau, made these comments after presenting exam kits to over 1,000 students preparing for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams and distributing laptops to higher education students in his constituency.
The peace agreement, signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on October 26, was witnessed by Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump. - November 13, 2025
