Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN chairmanship fostered unity and dialogue amid global uncertainty, marking Timor-Leste’s historic entry.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN chairmanship strengthened regional unity during a period of global anxiety.

Anwar, serving as the ASEAN Chair, said the summits were crucial platforms for bridging gaps among member states to tackle challenges.

“This year also marked a historic moment when Timor-Leste was accepted as ASEAN’s newest family member,” he said in a Facebook post.

He expressed deep appreciation to all ASEAN partners and world leaders for their commitment to regional stability.

Anwar also thanked all Malaysians for their support and hospitality throughout the chairmanship period.

“This chairmanship has elevated Malaysia as a trusted partner in efforts to uphold peace, stability and hope in the region,” he added.

Malaysia has now concluded its term and handed over the ASEAN chairmanship to the Philippines for 2026.

This was the fifth time Malaysia has led the regional bloc since its 1967 founding, following previous terms in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.
