Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye calls on Malaysians to embrace diversity, reject extremism and strengthen unity, integrity and patriotism for a resilient Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s diversity should never be viewed as a weakness in facing new and increasingly uncertain environments and challenges, says national unity advocate Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
In his message in conjunction with the country’s 69th National Day today, Lee said that in facing those challenges, unity in diversity should continue to be Malaysia’s greatest strength.
“Our different races, religions, cultures and backgrounds are part of the Malaysian identity that we have built together.
“We must reject hatred, extremism, intolerance and attempts to divide Malaysians.
“The spirit of Merdeka must remind us that we are Malaysians first, and that our common future is more important than our differences,” he said.
According to Lee, while the government has a fundamental responsibility to govern with integrity, competence, transparency and accountability, the people must also play their part in building a safe, harmonious and resilient nation.
He said every Malaysian should also reflect on the kind of country they wanted to leave for the next generation, including one where children could grow up safely, senior citizens could age with dignity, workers were protected, differences were respected, and public spaces were safe.
Lee also called on the people to strengthen the spirit of the Rukun Negara and uphold its principles in their daily lives, while placing national interest above narrow interests and cooperation above confrontation.
“The challenges ahead may be complex, but Malaysia has overcome difficult periods before. We can do so again if we remain united, responsible and committed to the common good,” he said.
Lee added that Malaysians should, on the 69th National Day, make a renewed pledge to protect unity, uphold integrity and be patriotic, respect one another, safeguard the nation and work together to build a safer, healthier, more harmonious and resilient Malaysia.
