Malaysia’s one-off F1 race to boost tourism, economy
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s return to the Formula One calendar has ignited jubilation among motorsport fans, with social media awash with nostalgia, celebration and anticipation after confirmation that the race will be staged at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).
The race marks the first time in Formula One history that a Grand Prix has been relocated to another country following its cancellation. Fans on Reddit and X reminisced about Sepang’s rich Formula One heritage, recalling iconic races, unforgettable moments and the circuit’s distinctive design that earned it a reputation as one of the most popular venues.

Wilson Yimby highlighted several milestones from Sepang’s Formula One history, noting that it was the first circuit designed from scratch by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke.
“Shanghai, Bahrain, Istanbul, Yas Marina and Singapore’s Marina Bay all came after. The modern F1 circuit template started in Selangor.”
The fan also pointed out the scale of the circuit’s construction, saying that nine million cubic metres of earth was moved to build the track, while the grandstand canopies were designed to resemble oil palm leaves in tribute to the plantations that once occupied the site.
Many also revisited some of Sepang’s most memorable races, including the rain-hit 2009 grand prix, where half points were awarded after torrential rain forced the race to be abandoned early and the 2001 race where Michael Schumacher recovered from a spin in wet conditions to secure victory for Ferrari.
“My hopes: reasonable ticket prices, championship fight is still tight, night race please,“ one Reddit user posted. X user @Loke_cnv said: “Finally, the F1 Grand Prix will be held in Malaysia, Sepang once again … let’s go!!! Malaysia, we won!!! After nine whole years … I can watch F1 in person again, but this time with my own adult money.”
Others offered advice for visitors, recommending that fans stay in Kuala Lumpur and use public transport to travel to the circuit.
