Malaysian national shuttlers Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik make Malaysia proud by winning Badminton World Championships at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on 28 August, just three days away from Merdeka Day!
Their historic achievement as Badminton World Champions at the World Championships final is one moment we have been waiting for as we usher in our 65th independence day.
Aaron-Wooi Yik are the FIRST Malaysians to ever win in the Badminton World Championships. Another first in Malaysia's history dethroning three-time defending Indonesian team Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan. This is a feat that our badminton team has been trying to achieve in the last 65 years, but somehow it has eluded us all these years until now!
This is indeed worth celebrating coming just at the right time when the country desperately needs heroes to help overcome our disgust and disappointment with so many crooked politicians who bring shame to the country merely dragging down the good name of our nation internationally.
The achievement of these new champions Aaron-Wooi Yik while glorifying Malaysia as a nation, will also spur the interest in sports and badminton specifically among the young.
More youths will come forward to reach for the skies to bring glory to the country. They clearly see with our achievement in Tokyo that the world is an oyster. All you need to do is pry it open, of course, the family must be supportive of their children.
And this is the case with these two. The New Straits Times said, "The undivided support of family members played a key role in Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik's success at the World Championships in Tokyo."
NST added by saying that Wooi Yik, who comes from a family of badminton players, he has done better than his father Soh Goon Chup and uncle Soo Beng Kiang, who were apparently national players themselves.
To jog your memory, Beng Kiang and Cheah Soon Kit won silver at the 1993 Birmingham World Championships
We are definitely proud of this pair of youngsters who have shown us the way to the top.
Now, Malaysia would like the pair to stay at the top, at least as long as those whom they dethroned in Tokyo recently.
More power to the youth!
