KUALA LUMPUR — The national karate squad delivered a commendable performance at the 12th Southeast Asian Karate Championships in Bandar Seri Begawan, securing four gold medals as the competition concluded yesterday.

Malaysia’s gold medals came from C. Shamalarani in the women’s senior kumite under 50kg, K.S. Thevendran Kaliana Sundram in the men’s senior kumite under 55kg, Sureeya Shankar Hari Shankar in the men’s senior kumite under 60kg, and the men’s senior team kumite event.

The team also bagged three bronze medals, courtesy of Lovelle Anne in the women’s senior kata, Mcroyce Donavan Dagol in the men’s senior kumite under 75kg, and the men’s senior team kata.

Acting national head coach R. Shamendran said he was generally pleased with the athletes’ showing.

“We didn’t set any specific targets for this tournament as we didn’t want to put pressure on the athletes,” he told Bernama today.

“Overall, I think their performance was decent, but I believe they are capable of doing even better.” — June 20, 2025
