NATIONAL mixed doubles pairs delivered impressive comeback victories to advance to the French Open second round.

Newly-crowned world champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Taiwan’s Yang Po-Hsuan-Hu Ling Fang 16-21, 21-16, 21-12.

The fourth seeds will next face another Taiwanese pair, Ye Hong Wei-Nicole Gonzales Chan, who eliminated Spain’s Ruben Garcia-Lucia Rodriguez 21-9, 21-16.

Professional duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie also fought back from a set down, needing 59 minutes to overcome Indonesian pair Amri Syahwani-Nita Violina Marwah 15-21, 21-17, 21-17.

The eighth-seeded husband-and-wife pair will meet Scotland’s Alexander Dunn-Julie Macpherson, who also came from behind to defeat South Korea’s Lee Jongmin-Chae Yu Jung 14-21, 21-12, 21-16.

In men’s doubles action, national pair Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King began their campaign with a straight-sets victory over France’s Eloi Adam-Leo Rossi 21-19, 21-17.

Wan Arif-Roy King will face either fourth-seeded Chinese pair Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang or their compatriots Xie Haonan-Zeng Wei Han in the second round. – Bernama
