Sometimes, you can't help but imagine Malaysian politics as a bull ring with cheering crowds in the gallery urging the Matador to slay the bull with his sword.
It's a cruel sport for animal lovers. The lonely bull has no sword. More often than not the bull dies a bloody death and the Matador is applauded by the adoring fans!
As with any sport, bull fighting has its own share of satires and jokes. One joke that comes easily to mind is about a bull's testicles served as a delicacy in a restaurant around the corner from the bull ring. An avid connoisseur of bull's testicles was surprised when he was served a pair of tiny testicles one night at dinner. He enquired why was he short changed, served with unusually tiny ones? The waiter replied, "Sir, some days the Matador at the moment of truth panicked and the bull triumped."
Oxford dictionary defines the moment of truth as a time when a person or thing is tested, a decision has to be made, or a crisis has to be faced. For the Matador who comes face to face with the bull it is indeed a moment of truth. He would be gored to death should he fail to kill the raging bull.
In the middle of 2023 in the Malaysian bull ring, a cow nicknamed "abahcow" (not a bull) will face a "mat-adore" with crowds cheering in the galley. If and when the animal should die obviously there'll be no testicles served at the Bullring Cafe.
Someone has drawn a parallel betwen Najib of "Bossku" fame and Muhyiddin fondly referred to as Abah by supporters and ridiculed by detracrors as "Abah kau" or spelt insultingly as Abahcow or sometimes they use Abahmoo.
Bossku was able to mobilise UMNO to capture Melaka and Johor before he went to jail. Perhaps, one writer did suggest that Abah might just capture most if not all six states in forthcoming elections shaking the confidence of the current administration.
Shanon Teoh of Singapore Straits Times said "The belief is that while Anwar has a two-thirds supermajority on paper, the 40 or so MPs in the government ranks, who had initially pledged support for Muhyiddin after the general election threw up a hung Parliament, can still be swayed if the administration ends up on shaky ground".
This is the moment of truth that any Matador hates the most. If he failed, the bull would gore him to death; If he won then he would be applauded by the adoring crowd.
However, for PMX the forthcoming state elections is a matter of life and death. If his coalition were to rake in a massive win, it would be a boost for him in Parliament but if the Opposition were victorious instead, it would be one huge crisis of confidence for PMX. It could even cost him his premiership.
