KUALA LUMPUR – Former national footballer T. Gopinath Naidu, once hailed as the “Kuala Lumpur Wonder Boy”, died yesterday (May 24) of cardiac arrest. He was 51.
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Malaysian Football League (MFL) confirmed the news, with both bodies extending their condolences to Gopinath’s family.
“FAM extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late T. Gopinath Naidu following the passing of the former national player this morning,” said the association in a statement.
MFL also paid tribute, describing him as a legend: “Deepest condolences to the family of the legendary Gopinath. May he rest in peace.”
Gopinath began his football journey at the age of 12 with Kuala Lumpur’s youth team, rising through the ranks to join the senior squad in 1992.
His talent shone early as he played a pivotal role in helping Kuala Lumpur clinch back-to-back FA Cup titles in 1993 and 1994.
His impressive form earned him stints abroad with English Premier League club Aston Villa and German side Bayern Leverkusen – rare opportunities for a Malaysian player at the time.
At the international level, Gopinath represented Malaysia at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima and in the qualifiers for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
He later joined Perak for a brief stint in 1996, but his career was tragically cut short due to recurring knee injuries. He underwent 19 surgeries before retiring at just 25 years old in 1999.
Gopinath is remembered not only for his achievements on the field but for inspiring a generation of local players during the 1990s, when his speed and flair made him a standout figure in Malaysian football. – May 25, 2025
