The act of Qurban is a significant religious practice in Islam performed all over the world by billions of Muslims between the 10th and 12th Zulhijjah, following on from the pilgrimage of Hajj & Eid al-Adha prayers. This sacrifice teaches important lessons about obedience, humility and faith. Qurban is more than just the act of sacrificing an animal. It's a true symbol of a Muslim's readiness to give up something valuable. (https://www.islam.gov.my)

It is also a way to share blessings with others, as the meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one-third for the family, one-third for friends and relatives, and one-third for those in need. The actual philosophy behind Qurban is deeply rooted in community and compassion. By sharing the meat, Muslims ensure that the joy of Eid al-Adha reaches everyone, especially the less fortunate in our society.

I learned that Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (MAHAR) announced the implementation of the 1446H/2025 Qurban Program in an effort to support vulnerable communities facing various challenges such as malnutrition and humanitarian crises. It focuses specifically on the most needy in areas affected by natural disasters, the war refugees, those poor, marinalised and extreme poverty in Kenya and Somalia.

MAHAR President Jismi Johari said, “In Malaysia, the distribution is carried out in an organised manner involving the families of Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) members at Sungai Besi Camp, the local community through the Semerah Assemblyman Service Centre, as well as Palestinian and Syrian refugees. Some of the meat from the sacrifice has been processed and packaged into food packs to be sent to the Gaza Strip.”

President Jismi added, “This year MAHAR also carried out special sacrifice in the name and on behalf of members, officers, volunteers and media friends who have shown extraordinary commitment and dedication in supporting MAHAR's humanitarian missions over all these years. This initiative is not only symbolic, but is really a manisfestation of our sincerity in appreciating joint efforts in making humanitarian missions successful at the national, regional and international levels."
