Puan Sri Datin Amar Nur Ashima Aziz

KUCHING (Oct 10): The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) has appointed Puan Sri Datin Amar Nur Ashima Aziz as chairperson of its board of trustees.

MNS said the appointment marks a new chapter in the organisation’s 84-year journey of conservation work, which spans the protection of forests, wetlands, and wildlife across Malaysia.

Nur Ashima, who previously served with the MNS Sabah Branch, joins a leadership team of accomplished women, including president Anna Wong, vice-president Noor Jehan Abu Bakar, and honorary secretary Assoc Prof Dr Chong Ju Lian.

“With renewed leadership and eight decades of experience, MNS remains committed to uniting Malaysians for nature—protecting forests, wetlands, and wildlife for future generations,” the society said in a statement.

Founded in 1940, MNS has been instrumental in safeguarding Malaysia’s biodiversity through the establishment of nature parks in Peninsular Malaysia and through grassroots conservation efforts in Sabah and Sarawak.

In Borneo, MNS has maintained a strong presence through its Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and Miri branches, which have championed initiatives such as hornbill surveys, wetland and coastal monitoring, firefly studies, and community-driven events, such as the Santubong Nature Festival, that bring together science, culture, and conservation.

MNS is Malaysia’s oldest and largest environmental non-governmental organisation.
