Two-time Paralympic champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin aims for gold in the men’s 80kg powerlifting event at the ASEAN Para Games in Thailand
TWO-time Paralympic gold medallist Bonnie Bunyau Gustin is targeting the top podium finish in the men’s 80-kilogramme powerlifting event at the ASEAN Para Games (APG) 2025.
The 26-year-old Malaysian knows he must remain calm and focused, with only one other competitor from Thailand in his category.
“I will need to lift around 200kg if I hope to strike gold,” he told reporters after a meeting with Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol.
Bonnie, who last competed at the APG in 2017, said the Games in Nakhon Ratchasima hold special meaning for his national team journey.
He admitted there are always challenges and that he never takes them lightly.
This marks his first attempt in the 80kg category, having previously won his Paralympic titles in the 72kg class.
He will be accompanied by his elder brother, Bryan Junency Gustin, who will compete in the 88kg category.
Both events are scheduled for Saturday.
