PETALING JAYA: Independent scratch women’s doubles pair Lai Pei Jing-Lim Chiew Sien caused a stir by reaching the final of the Australian Open badminton championship in Sydney after upsetting Yeung Nga Ting-Yeung Pui Lam of Hong Kong.

Undeterred by her earlier loss in the mixed doubles semi-final with Tan Kian Meng, Pei Jing partnered Chiew Sien to win convincingly by 21-13, 18-21, 21-14.

They will meet Indonesia’s Febriana Dwipuji/Amalia Chaya in the final tomorrow.

Kian Meng-Pei Jing had earlier lost their mixed doubles tie to top seeds Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin from China 21-11, 21-11.

Recently, Pei Jing revealed that she had been left nearly penniless after being a victim of a major scam.

In a recent interview with Spotv, she said she and Chiew Sien were just trying something new for fun, adding that Chiew Sien also played in the mixed doubles with Wong Tien Ci but lost in the last 16.

Pei Jing last competed in the women’s doubles in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games along with Cheah Yee See, who retired from the sport last month.

The pair made it into the second round before going down to England’s eventual silver medallists Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith.
