In a significant move to strengthen digital security, major Malaysian telecommunication companies have announced a collaboration to fight fraud and digital identity theft. CelcomDigi Bhd, Maxis Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Bhd, and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd will provide banks and online retailers with access to a federated number verification system . This initiative, unveiled at the Digital Nation Summit, Kuala Lumpur ASEAN Edition, is part of the global GSMA Open Gateway programme.

A New Approach to Secure Digital Identity

The number verification system allows banks and approved online companies  to verify a mobile user’s identity against real-time network data. The system  aims to protect Malaysians from scams while providing a smooth digital experience. The  gateway is designed to help developers create services that work seamlessly with every participating mobile network operator, providing wide market coverage.

Industry Collaboration for a Safer Digital Ecosystem

Executives from all five telecommunications companies have expressed strong support for the joint effort, highlighting the importance of industry-wide cooperation to build digital trust and security.

According to Julian Gorman, head of Asia-Pacific at GSMA, the initiative is part of a global programme involving 79 operator groups, covering 291 networks and nearly 80% of all mobile connections worldwide. This collaborative effort demonstrates a shared commitment to creating a safer and more reliable digital environment for all Malaysians.
