“Malaysians, your government is doing something right here and I’m very, very jealous.”
THE ongoing US-Israel conflict against Iran has driven oil prices up, and one Filipino woman has taken to Threads to praise the Malaysian government with the implementation of subsidised petrol.
In a Threads post, social media user @kapewithkate shared her surprise after a routine petrol stop with her husband in Malaysia.
“Pumped petrol yesterday and my husband paid RM100, but I saw the total on the screen was actually RM164.32.
“Then he explained, that’s the full (non-subsidised) price. Meaning the Malaysian government actually subsidised RM64.32.
“Meanwhile, in the Philippines, petrol is almost around PHP100 per liter (about RM6.80/L).”
She then praised the government, “Whatever side you’re on politically, credit where it’s due. Malaysians, your government is doing something right here and I’m very, very jealous.”
Her post quickly drew reactions from netizens, with many agreeing that fuel subsidies are one of the country’s biggest cost-of-living buffers.
“I am eternally grateful that Malaysian petrol prices are still considered to be one of the cheapest in the world,” one user commented, adding that the quality is also relatively high.
One added that Malaysians often overlook the benefits they already have.
“And still people are complaining,” one comment read.
