‘Malvinas are Argentinian’: Victors celebrate with Falklands banner after England World Cup exit

Argentinian players held up a Falklands sign on the pitch after knocking England out of the World Cup on Wednesday (15 July).

During full-time celebrations, the players took the provocative banner from their supporters, which read: “The Malvinas are Argentine.”

Tensions linger between the two nations over the Falkland Islands, known as ‘Las Malvinas’ in Argentina, which resulted in a conflict in 1982.

The islands are administered by the UK but are still claimed by Argentina.

Prior to the match, a meeting involving the FBI, Fifa, and local police addressed the deep-seated historical animosity between the nations and potential fan escalation.

Fifa prohibits political, religious, or personal slogans on the field.
