Man arrested in notorious ‘Putney Pusher’ case

A man has been arrested in the decade-long manhunt for the ‘Putney Pusher’.

The 44-year-old was arrested at his home in west London and remains in police custody.

The shocking CCTV images from 2017 showed a jogger pushing a female pedestrian into the path of a double-decker bus on Putney Bridge.

Detectives involved in the case interviewed 50 men and arrested three suspects at the time, including an American investment banker who was in the US when the incident took place.

No one was ever charged and the case was closed in 2018.

The man was seen pushing the woman into the path of a double-decker bus (PA)

The incident took place during rush hour at around 7.40am, with the jogger forcefully pushing the woman onto the road as he ran past.

The victim, who has never been identified, survived with few injuries after the bus driver’s quick actions ensured he missed her head by inches.

The jogger returned about 15 minutes later and passed the victim again while she was still receiving help on the bridge, and ignored her calls to stop.

He was described as being a white man in his early to mid-30s, with short brown hair and a stocky build. He was wearing dark blue shorts, trainers and a grey T-shirt.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "On Monday, 15 June, a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.

"He was taken to police custody, where he remains.

"The arrest relates to an incident on 5 May 2017, where a woman was pushed into the path of a bus on Putney Bridge in Putney.

"Inquiries continue."

Fleur Anderson, MP for Putney, said:“This is a significant step forward and one that many people in Putney will welcome after such a long time.

"My thoughts are with the woman involved - I hope this brings her some reassurance.

"I’d like to thank the police for sticking with this case over the years. It’s important now that the investigation is able to proceed properly.”
