Man arrested over fatal stabbing of British woman in Germany ‘detained in psychiatric hospital’

A suspect in the fatal stabbing of a 31-year-old British woman at a railway station in southern Germany has been detained in a psychiatric hospital, police have said.

The woman suffered “severe injuries” in the knife attack at the Rosenheim train station just before 1am on Sunday and died in hospital.

Bavarian Police said the federal officers arrested a 27-year-old German citizen of no fixed address at the scene “immediately after the attack”.

He appeared before a judge later on Sunday and, following a request from the Traunstein Public Prosecutor’s Office, was detained in a psychiatric hospital on suspicion of murder.

Police said the circumstances and motive of the attack are being looked at as part of an ongoing investigation by the police and the public prosecutor’s office.

The names of the victim and suspect have not been released in line with German privacy rules.

Officers are asking for any witnesses who may have seen “an argument or physical altercation” at the Rosenheim train station in the early hours to come forward.

Train operator Deutsche Bahn, which is also in charge of the country’s train stations, said on Sunday that “our thoughts today are with the family and friends of the young woman.”

Deutsche Bahn said its security personnel, who were at the crime scene together with federal police, were still in shock and would need time to process the stabbing, the German news agency dpa reported.

Train service was not significantly disrupted by the incident, police said, adding that the forensic investigation in an underpass at the station had already been completed by the time the first trains began running again early on Sunday morning.

A Foreign Office spokesperson previously said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Germany and are in touch with the local authorities.”
