The man accused of stabbing his former wife in Patiala’s Tripuri area has been found dead under mysterious circumstances a few days after the incident, officials said Thursday.

The deceased, identified as Deepak Kumar, had allegedly attacked his divorced wife Meenakshi (40) with a knife last week, leaving her critically injured. The victim is admitted to the ICU of a private hospital and is battling for life.

Police sources said that after the attack, Deepak uploaded a video on social media and disappeared, triggering a search operation.

A couple of days ago, an unidentified man was found lying unconscious near the Polo Ground and was rushed to Rajindra Hospital by an ambulance driver. Doctors declared him brought dead and the body was kept in the mortuary for identification.

A team from Civil Lines police station traced the identity of the deceased through a mobile phone recovered from the body. Relatives later confirmed that the deceased was Deepak — the same man booked for attempting to murder his former wife.

Police suspect that he may have consumed some poisonous substance after carrying out the attack. However, the exact cause of death would be established only after the postmortem examination.

Deepak had allegedly attacked Meenakshi multiple times with a knife over a domestic dispute. Following the incident, Tripuri police registered a case of attempt to murder on the complaint of the victim’s daughter.
