Man City v Coventry LIVE: Hosts hang on to avoid Premier League shock after Haaland goal

Manchester City extended their winning start to the Premier League side as Coventry City were denied their first point by a brilliant performance from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The goalkeeper made several big saves, including late on to deny Coventry substitute Ellis Simms, as Enzo Maresca’s team hung on to take all three points.

It seemed as if the hosts would enjoy a comfortable afternoon after Erling Haaland met Antoine Semenyo’s cross to head City into the lead with his third of the season.

But Coventry stayed alive and had many chances to claim a point, in a performance that will offer manager Frank Lampard some encouragement despite a third defeat from three.

City offered debuts to new signings Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye, with record signing Fernandez replacing Nico O’Reilly at the last minute after an injury in the warm-ups.

The previous time Enzo Fernandez had started a match, he exited in disgrace. A few weeks and £125m later, some Manchester City fans stood to applaud their most expensive debutant ever.

From being sent off in the World Cup final to being parachuted in for an unexpected start, it has been an eventful few weeks for the Argentinian. Relatively speaking, this was the calm after the storm.

Coventry defender Bobby Thomas says:

17:11 , Flo Clifford

“It was a positive performance. We have had a tough start, but today was the start of our proper season. The way we set up and went about the game, it is a good start.

"We knew it would be tricky to create chances, we came here to frustrate and get them on the counter. We did that well, we didn't convert our chances which is the tricky part. Another day, maybe.

"They have loads of players between the lines, they are a good side. You have to respect that, we did and defended properly. But we managed to limit them well.

"We can't come here with the thought we are playing against so and so, we deserve to be here fully and have to grab the chance with both hands. Today we gave a good account of ourselves."

FULL-TIME: Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:54 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

A win for Manchester City, but not a hugely convincing one. Coventry remain pointless and goalless after three games but can take quite a lot of encouragement from this, and can rue the fine form of Donnarumma.

They had Enzo Maresca's side under the cosh in the closing stages, and perhaps it was just as well Maresca had a back four who are all central defenders by trade as they held on. But for now, these teams are top and bottom of the table respectively.

FULL-TIME: Man City 1-0 Coventry

An end for another City newcomer. Ndiaye is hobbling off, though it doesn't look anything serious. He has put in a good shift on the left flank today without suggesting he will keep Jeremy Doku out of the team when the Belgian is fit again.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:43 , Flo Clifford

‘85: Thomas can’t get a header on target. Coventry are pushing for an equaliser.

Hamer comes on for Dasilva for the last five minutes or so.

SAVE! Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:38 , Flo Clifford

‘80: Donnarumma makes himself massive again to deny Simms! Pinpoint cross by Yirenkyi, not dealt with by Khusanov at all.

Now it’s turned behind for a goal-kick.

OFF THE LINE! Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:37 , Flo Clifford

‘79: City have three chances in about 10 seconds! One by Foden somehow doesn’t go over the line, hooked clear by Thomas, then it’s sent over the bar!

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:36 , Flo Clifford

‘77: Haaland runs straight into Thomas. Great defending there, nicking it away from the big man.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:34 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

‘75: Enzo Fernandes is substituted. Quite a few City fans stand to applaud. Some Coventry fans boo. It has been a decent debut, though.

Bouaddi is on in his place.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:32 , Flo Clifford

‘73: Semenyo crosses in and it’s nearly a replay of the first goal, he gets away down the right channel, slides the cross past Amenda - but Haaland can’t turn it home.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:31 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

Loum Tchouna has just had a shot parried by Donnarumma. It shows that Coventry are threatening an equaliser. City may yet rue their inability to get a second goal.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:29 , Flo Clifford

‘72: Now Grimes whips it wide of the bottom corner! Narrowly, narrowly wide.

Thomas-Asante and Simms are coming on. Awoniyi, who missed a couple of big chances, and Mason-Clark are the ones coming off.

SAVE! Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:28 , Flo Clifford

‘70: Coventry win a free-kick and the away fans are willing their team on, singing lustily.

Donnarumma makes an excellent save from Tchouana, it’s not the cleanest shot but needed a big right hand from the keeper! City scramble clear!

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:24 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

‘65: Rayan Cherki goes off, to be replaced by Phil Foden. The attention has been on Enzo Fernandez but Cherki has been the best player on the pitch today.

‘65: Coventry cheer ironically as they win a free-kick... Tchouana whips it in, it’s pulled back into the mixer down the right, but City wrestle it clear!

Still very open...

16:22 , Flo Clifford

‘64: Changes for Coventry: Caleb Yirenkyi and Loum Tchaouna replace Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

Briefly, it seemed Fernandez might have got his first assist, hooking the ball to Haaland for a tap in, but the Argentinian was offside.

 (Reuters)

OFFSIDE! Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:16 , Flo Clifford

‘59: Fernandez brings the ball down from a Haaland header and returns it to the Norwegian, but the flag is very quickly offside! The Argentine was clearly off, no argument there.

CLOSE! Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:15 , Flo Clifford

‘56: Ndiaye fancies it on his debut! The ball bounces kindly for Coventry though as they scramble it clear, but City come again...

Man City 1-0 Coventry

‘53: Anderson blasts over the crossbar. Guehi sets off a move which is worked towards Haaland but Coventry cut it out.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:09 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

It is notable that Fernandez is playing more as the No 8 in midfield, the box-to-box role, with Elliot Anderson as the No 6, anchoring the midfield.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:07 , Flo Clifford

‘47: City begin the second half as they finished the first. Semenyo’s cross is headed away by Thomas before Haaland can get there.

SECOND HALF: Man City 1-0 Coventry

16:04 , Flo Clifford

Away we go in this second half.

HALF-TIME: Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:54 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

A decent first half for City and for Fernandez, who has been quite prominent. Haaland has had a couple of other efforts well saved by Rushworth. Cherki has been terrific. Coventry may rue the missed chances by Awoniyi and Rudoni.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:49 , Flo Clifford

‘45: Half-time at the Etihad and Coventry breathe a sigh of relief after withstanding a barrage of pressure.

City lead through a Haaland header but it could easily be 2-1 to Coventry after Donnarumma was lucky to avoid the ball crossing the line with a poor clearance, while Awoniyi missed a fine chance early on too. Still a very open game.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:46 , Flo Clifford

‘44: Haaland gets in behind... Rushworth makes himself massive to make the save, then gets his gloves to it as it drops out of the air! Another line-splitting pass from City, Cherki and Anderson combining lethally there.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:44 , Flo Clifford

‘43: Ndiaye crosses in towards Semenyo with another burst of pace, and Coventry are desperate for the half-time whistle.

Gvardiol pulls it back, looking for Haaland, it’s worked to Fernandez - over the crossbar! Offside anyway.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:41 , Flo Clifford

‘40: Awoniyi darts away but Anderson sticks with him and draws the foul! A very dangerous moment for City but the £116m man keeps his cool and wins the ball.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:39 , Flo Clifford

‘38: Coventry look to break quickly but Dasilva overhits it and it goes out of play.

City get back in behind, Semenyo pulls it back at the byline for Cherki... eventually the offside flag goes up. Another City flurry as we head towards the end of this half.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:37 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

‘36: Fernandez has had two shots blocked by Coventry defenders in the space of a few seconds. His last goal, England fans may remember, came in the World Cup semi-final.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:32 , Flo Clifford

‘31: That’s a 300th goal in club football for Haaland, by the way, at the age of just 26.

Coventry deal well with a couple of Anderson crosses. Fernandez crosses in, Coventry survive. A very busy spell by City and they’re causing the visitors all sort of problems.

Cherki has a shot blocked from a corner, ultimately Mason-Clark clears the danger on the turn.

Man City 1-0 Coventry

A bullet header by Erling Haaland, his second headed goal since he cut his hair off. Maybe it wasn't the source of his powers after all.

GOAL! Man City 1-0 Coventry

15:27 , Flo Clifford

‘26: Semenyo crosses in and Haaland fires in the bullet header! Breakthrough for City!

 (Reuters)

OFF THE POST! Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:25 , Flo Clifford

‘24: Haaland chases down Rushworth but the keeper does remarkably well to keep his cool and avoid him.

Now City flood forward in numbers and Cherki, after some fancy footwork hits the woodwork! Nearly three in three for him! Coventry clear the danger and counter.... brilliant long throw by van Ewijk and now Donnarumma saves a header at the back post from Rudoni!

Fernandez making an impression

15:24 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Fernandez does look reasonably fit. He had one outing for Chelsea this season, as a substitute at Fulham, when both sets of fans booed him. He has made a couple of forward darts and linked up well with Semenyo

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:23 , Flo Clifford

‘21: Van Ewijk is the first player into the book for a foul. Now Fernandez has his shirt pulled and we’ll have a City free-kick, about 25 yards out on the right.

The game is continuing while a Man City fan is in some distress in the crowd, with stewards in attendance.

Cherki sends it in... hoofed away by Dasilva.

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:20 , Flo Clifford

‘19: Coventry are forced to clear the lines quickly again as Haaland has another chance... relentless from City now, Semenyo makes a diagonal run and has a go, Rushworth just about does enough to flick it away from goal but the flag goes up anyway!

SAVE! Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:19 , Flo Clifford

‘16: City take a free-kick quickly through Anderson; he splits the lines and Cherki releases Haaland on the turn, with the Norwegian aiming for the back post - but Rushworth reacts well to deny the big man.

The resulting corner is headed clear. First shot on target of the day.

 (Reuters)

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:17 , Flo Clifford

‘13: Rushworth does well to avoid a first City corner. Coventry counter now... Anderson escapes a foul on Mason-Clark as referee Paul Tierney keeps things flowing.

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:13 , Flo Clifford

‘10: City concede a corner out of nowhere. Considering they’ve had all the possession so far they’ve suddenly fallen asleep and Coventry could be 2-0 up.

Haaland clears and tries to release Ndiaye on the counter but Coventry quash that.

 (Reuters)

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:11 , Richard Jolly at the Etihad

Antoine Semenyo has sent a striker clean through on goal. Although it wasn't Erling Haaland but Coventry's Taiwo Awoniyi, with a misplaced pass. Thankfully for Semenyo, Awoniyi shot wide.

WIDE! Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:10 , Flo Clifford

‘8: Coventry steal it on the half-way line, Awoniyi beats Khusanov for pace - Donnarumma comes flying off his line but Awoniyi sends it wide! What a waste of a chance!

Semenyo bettered on half-way there, very sloppy from City.

CLOSE! Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:09 , Flo Clifford

‘7: My word, Donnarumma takes a touch on his goalline as City pass back and is very, very cool considering that looked like he went over the line! Nearly an absolute disaster for City!

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:08 , Flo Clifford

‘6: Rushworth goes for a goal-kick and that’s the first time the ball has actually entered City’s half. Normal service resumed as City pass the ball between themselves.

Fernandez puts some pressure on down the left and gets in Amenda’s way... he’s playing a lot higher than he did at Chelsea, so far.

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:05 , Flo Clifford

‘4: Cherki crosses in but Thomas defends well, and City are already piling on the pressure... Cherki chips it in but Rushworth grabs it before Fernandez can reach the rebound!

Richard Jolly notes that Fernandez's last start, of course, was the World Cup final. Which didn't end very well for him.

Man City 0-0 Coventry

15:04 , Flo Clifford

‘2: Haaland immediately puts keeper Rushworth under some pressure, with Anderson dropping deep as City get off to a bright start.

Enzo Maresca clarifies whether Enzo Fernandez is part of Man City’s leadership group

14:48 , Flo Clifford

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that new signing Enzo Fernandez is not going to be part of his leadership group this season.

Fernandez, a £125m signing from Chelsea on deadline day, was one of Maresca’s captains during their time together at Stamford Bridge.

But Maresca said Ruben Dias will be City’s captain this season, followed by Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Maresca confirmed that Fernandez is “ready” to make his debut against Coventry and Saturday - although he will do so off the bench, if so.

Lampard warns Coventry must adapt to Premier League

14:41 , Flo Clifford

Speaking ahead of this game, Coventry boss Frank Lampard said: “I think we all know that it will not look like last season, and the quicker we realise that the better, because last season was an incredible season for us because we won a lot and everything becomes easier in that moment.

“So, it’s important that we understand the rigours of the Premier League, how it may feel different and that mindset has to be clear on that to be able to get up after a difficult result like Hull in whatever way or shape it may come.”

Can a player ever be worth £100m to a football club?

14:32 , Flo Clifford

A wild summer window saw the market explode so that nine-figure sums are the new normal, writes Lawrence Ostlere. So are £100m fees ever justified or entirely detached from reality?

Can a player ever be worth £100m to a football club?

How did the two clubs' transfer windows fare?

14:24 , Flo Clifford

Manchester City

Ins: Enzo Fernandez (£125m), Elliot Anderson (£116m), Ayyoub Bouaddi (£85.6m), Iliman Ndiaye (£60m), Allan (£32m), Mathys Detourbet (£21.6m), Jeremy Monga (£12.5m), Pierce Charles (£3m), Gerónimo Rulli (£1.7m)

Outs: Savio (£75m), Nico González (£52m), Tijjani Reijnders (£52m), Rodri (£51.3m), James Trafford (£40.5m), Nathan Ake (£7m), Issa Kaboré (£2m), Reigan Heskey (£2m), Stephen Mfuni (loan), Manuel Akanji (undisclosed fee), Jack Grealish (loan), Omar Marmoush (loan), Divine Mukasa (loan), Max Alleyne (loan), Finley Burns (undisclosed fee), Lakyle Samuel (loan), Emilio Lawrence (loan), Divin Mubama (loan), John Stones (free), Joel Ndala (undisclosed fee), Spike Brits (loan), Matty Warhurst (undisclosed fee), Sverre Nypan (loan), Pierce Charles (loan), Mathys Detourbet (loan), Isaac Smith (undisclosed fee), Oliver Whatmuff (loan), Bernardo Silva (free), Jahmai Simpson-Pusey (undisclosed fee), Jaden Heskey (loan), Luca Fletcher (undisclosed fee), Kalvin Phillips (loan), Christian McFarlane (loan), Jeremy Monga (loan), Claudio Echeverri (loan)

Verdict: There has been a lot of change at the Etihad in what is Enzo Maresca’s first window in charge. Just look above: for nine signings, see 33 departures. A new midfield trio of Enzo Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi is extremely exciting but the exit of Rodri – the favourite to claim a second Ballon d’Or – is unequivocally a huge blow. Club stalwarts like Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Nathan Ake have also left and Maresca may have quite the job on to get all his big-money signings to gel in the absence of such huge squad characters. - KJ

How did the two clubs' transfer windows fare?

14:17 , Flo Clifford

Coventry

Ins: Caleb Yirenkyi (£23m), Carl Rushworth (£22.5m), Sidiki Cherif (£20.5m), Loum Tchaouna (£20m), Aurele Amenda (£15.4m), Taiwo Awoniyi (£9m), Ethan Pinnock (£6m), Gustavo Hamer (£6m), Stephen Mfuni (loan), Dan Bentley (undisclosed fee), Frank Onyeka (undisclosed fee), Billy-Ray Cullinane (free)

Outs: Kai Andrews (loan), Miguel Angel Brau (loan), Jahnoah Markelo (undisclosed fee), Norman Bassette (loan), Callum Perry (loan), Brad Collins (free), Isaac Moore (loan), Liam Kitching (loan), Charlie Finney (free), Rylie Siddall (free), Oliver Dovin (loan), Raphael Borges Rodrigues (loan)

Verdict: Ambitious. Frank Lampard has been backed without totally disrupting the group that impressively won the Championship last term. Well over £100m spent, which might now just be a necessary entry point to a promoted side having a realistic chance of survival. But Caleb Yirenkyi is an exciting addition and Taiwo Awoniyi could prove a shrewd buy with the Nigerian striker's disruptive presence and potential for more goals than his recent time with Forest, should Lampard afford him a run of games. - JR

Last season’s Championship winners Coventry have had a difficult start to life back in the top flight.

Why Enzo Fernandez will either MAKE or BREAK Man City

13:38 , Flo Clifford

While we wait for confirmed line-ups (coming shortly), Adam Clery broke down how Man City’s biggest new signing will fit into the squad.

Enzo Fernandez joined from Chelsea in a deal that equals the British transfer record of £125m. This takes Man City's spending on a 'new look midfield' to over £300m, but will this propel them to a serious title challenge this season?

What is the Coventry City team news?

13:32 , Jamie Braidwood

Coventry have no reported injury concerns ahead of their trip to Manchester City. The Championship winners concluded their summer transfer business by signing winger Yann Gboho from Toulouse on deadline day. The 25-year-old is the cousin of PSG and France star Desire Doue.

What is the Manchester City team news?

13:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Enzo Fernandez is “ready” to make his first Manchester City appearance following his record-equalling £125m move from Chelsea on deadline day. Matheus Nunes is fit but Jeremy Doku remains sidelined due to injury. City must make the trip to Portugal to play Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday, which will likely come into Enzo Maresca’s thinking.

Good afternoon and welcome

13:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Hello, hello. Manchester City bid to make it three wins out of three to start the Premier League season as they host Coventry, who I would imagine would absolutely snap your hand off for a point at the Etihad. Frank Lampard’s team lost 1-0 at home to Hull last Saturday and now must face Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and a Manchester City attack that clicked into life quite brilliantly as they won 4-1 at Crystal Paalce last Friday night.

Stay tuned for all the build-up, and team news from 1:45pm.
