Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old man was fined a total of RM30,000 for allowing six illegal immigrants to stay in his premises.
Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence to Simon Wong after he pleaded guilty to the charge against him.
Wong was found permitting the six Filipinos, aged between 31 and 49, who did not have any document, to be in the premises at 10.40pm on Nov 1 this year at the Life Style Foot Reflexology&Therapy Centre Lot 66&67 Ground Lintas Square, here.
The offence, under Section 55E(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, carries a jail term of up to a year, or a fine of between RM5,000 and RM30,000, or both, for each illegal immigrant involved.
The court ordered Wong to pay RM5,000 fine or one month’s jail for each illegal immigrant involved.
During mitigation, he asked for leniency as he had pleaded guilty to the charge against him.
However, Prosecuting Officer Abdul Latif from the Immigration Department urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as to give a lesson not only to Lee but public at large.
Meanwhile, a 55-year-old woman was fined RM5,000 or spend a month in prison for also allowing a-19-year-old Filipina to stay in the place which was under her care.
Tainah Ading admitted to permitting the illegal immigrant to stay at the Kedai Kopi Sunflower in Manggatal Plaza Phase 2, here at 6.20pm on Oct 12 this year.
