The Sessions Court here on Monday sentenced a 52-year-old Filipino man to 36 years in prison after he admitted to offences involving his step-granddaughter, which resulted in the birth of a baby boy in July this year.
Judge Zaini Fishir @ Fisal handed down the sentence after the man pleaded guilty to two counts under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, read together with Sections 16(1) and 26(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.
The court was told that the first offence occurred on Oct 13, 2024, when the girl was at home doing chores and was pulled into the living room by her step-grandfather.
The second offence took place on Oct 15, 2024, while the victim and her siblings were taken to a plantation near their home, where the man isolated her before committing the act.
On July 18 this year, the girl gave birth to a baby boy, and the man later disclosed the situation to his wife, before instructing the victim to keep the matter hidden from her younger siblings.
The girl and her two siblings had been living with their grandmother and step-grandfather following the separation of their parents, and the matter only came to light when her mother lodged a police report on July 23.
For each charge, the man was sentenced to 15 years in jail and 10 strokes of the cane, plus an additional three years and two strokes under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, bringing the total to 36 years and 24 strokes, with Immigration referral ordered upon completion of his sentence.
