KOTA KINABALU: A 26-year-old man was jailed five years and fined RM1,000 after admitting to using three fake RM50 notes to buy a Touch 'n Go reload at a petrol station in Penampang.

Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan passed the sentence on Mohd Noor Hafizan Azlan, who maintained his guilty plea when the case was brought up for facts and sentencing on Friday.

The court was told that Hafizan used the counterfeit notes at the Golden Hill Enterprise Shell station in Jalan Pintas Donggongon on 19 December last year, with CCTV footage later confirming his actions.

The prosecutor urged for a deterrent sentence after police found another RM1,220 in fake notes during his arrest, and noted that Hafizan had previously absconded while on bail.

In a separate case, a 30-year-old undocumented man was jailed three years and given three strokes of the cane for possessing 27.59g of syabu, and will be referred to immigration authorities after serving his term.
