Kota Kinabalu: A 27-year-old unemployed man was jailed seven months, Friday, for having a roll of stolen cables belonging to a telecommunications company.

Mohd Afwan Jaafar pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to having the stolen cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia at Jalan Tebobon, Kg Ratau, Manggatal at 11.55am on Dec 10, last year.

He was jointly charged with Nazri Hassan in committing the offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both, on conviction.

Nazri had on Dec 22, last year pleaded guilty to the charge and was jailed 11 months.

The stolen cables were found inside a car with tools.

Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence requested a lenient sentence as he is married with one child.

The prosecution applied for a deterrent sentence, adding that he is currently serving sentence for another offence.

Afwan was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest.

In another case, a 42-year-old undocumented man was jailed two months for trespassing into a golf course.

Asap Bekkong admitted to sneaking into the Kinabalu Golf Club (KGC) course here at 6pm on Dec 19, last year.

The charge under Section 447 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to six months jail or fine or both on conviction.

The prosecution informed the court that Asap was arrested and a bag containing 30 golf balls was also seized from him.

Asap, who was not represented, requested for a lenient sentence.

When asked by the court for trespassing into the area, Asap said he went there to find golf balls for sale.

Lovely ordered Asap to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and granted the prosecution’s application for him to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.

Meanwhile, a security guard was charged with committing mischief by breaking a glass window of a mosque in Kg Gudon, Manggatal.

Suhaili Shuhaib, 39, pleaded not guilty to committing the offence which caused a loss of RM390 at 10.30am on Dec 30, last year. The charge is framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuting, in applying for pre-trial case management, proposed bail at RM4,000 in two sureties.

Duty counsel Lim requested a lower bail amount as Suhaili, who is married, has four children.

The court set Feb 2 for mention and released the accused on a bail of RM1,800 in two sureties.
