A man was killed while his companion suffered a fractured arm after the four-wheel-drive vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a drainage hole along Jalan Pantai here on Friday.

LAHAD DATU - A man was killed while his companion suffered a fractured arm after the four-wheel-drive vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a drainage hole along Jalan Pantai here on Friday.

The incident occurred at about 7am, with Muhammad Almadi Hassan pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Wilyamil Ahajul, 34, sustained a broken arm.

Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station chief Sumsoa Rashid said his department received a distress call at 7.08am and dispatched 14 personnel to the scene, about two kilometres from the station.

“The operations commander reported that a Toyota Vigo skidded, struck a barrier and plunged into a drainage hole that was still under construction.

“Rescue teams immediately carried out operations to extricate the two victims from the seven-metre-deep hole using ropes and stretchers. One victim was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene, while the other sustained a fractured arm,” he said in a statement.

Sumsoa said the deceased was handed over to the police for further action, while the injured victim was taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

He added that firefighters installed safety barriers at the scene before the operation was concluded at 9.07am.
