Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old was killed after his Perodua Viva skidded and crashed into a tree along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen near the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), on Friday.
The incident, which occurred at 12.22am, happened when the victim, who was driving from the left lane, attempted to overtake a Proton Saga.
District Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said the vehicle went out of control, veered to the right side of the road and slammed into a tree on the road divider.
“The impact was so strong that the engine dislodged and landed on the road before being hit by the Proton Saga. The victim died at the scene from severe head injuries, while the 28-year-old Proton driver was unhurt,” he said.
The body was sent to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital’s Forensic Unit for identification and post-mortem. A blood sample was also taken for toxicology analysis.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Kasim advised motorists to always drive carefully, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and ensure they hold a valid licence to prevent tragedies.
