Man killed in Keningau crash

KENINGAU: A man was killed after the Perodua Myvi he was driving skidded and plunged into a concrete drain near the Shell Petrol Station, here, Tuesday morning.

The Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre received an emergency call regarding the incident at 8.58am before dispatching a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team from the Keningau Fire and Rescue Station to the scene with eight personnel.

Upon arrival, the rescue team led by Operations Commander Senior Fire Officer I (PBK I) Norhasrita found the male victim trapped inside the vehicle, which had become lodged inside the drain.

Firefighters first carried out a risk assessment and rescue procedures at the scene before stabilising the vehicle to ensure the safety of rescuers. Due to the unstable position of the car, “chocking” techniques were applied to the tyres while a winch cable from the FRT machinery was used as an anchor to prevent movement.

The operation was also assisted by a tow truck at the scene, which helped pull the vehicle slightly to provide a safer working space for rescuers.

After the vehicle stabilised, firefighters gained access through the window area to allow rescuers to assess the victim’s condition.

However, medical personnel confirmed the victim had died at the scene.

The process of removing the victim’s body took some time due to the limited working space and the victim’s physical size.

Firefighters eventually managed to extricate the victim carefully using a scoop stretcher before handing the body over to the Police for further action.
