TAWAU: A man was killed after the car he was driving collided with a tanker lorry along Jalan Apas Balung, near Kampung Sungai Burung, at 11.45am, on Wednesday.
District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the 24-year-old local victim died at the scene, while the 36-year-old lorry driver escaped unharmed.
“We received a call around 12.20pm regarding the crash involving a Perodua Bezza sedan and a Nissan tanker lorry,” he said, Thursday.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the tanker was travelling from Merotai towards Kunak, carrying a load of crude palm oil, when the accident occurred.
The sedan coming from the opposite direction is believed to have suddenly entered the lorry’s lane, resulting in a collision.
“The impact caused the tanker to swerve into the right divider and overturn in the middle of the road, while the sedan was thrown back into its original lane,” Jasmin said.
A medical officer from the Balung Health Clinic confirmed the victim’s death at the scene after conducting an examination.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
