KUALA LUMPUR – The individual who is accused of stepping on the Quran will be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction on Tuesday.

In a statement today, the Attorney General’s Chambers confirmed that Vickneswaran Selvanathan will face charges under Section 295 of the Penal Code [Act 574] for allegedly defiling an object regarded as sacred, namely, the Quran by stepping on it, with the knowledge that such an act constitutes an insult to the religion of Islam.

He will also be charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 [Act 588] for creating and initiating communication deemed grossly offensive in nature, with the intent to cause hurt to others via the Threads application.

The decision was made following an examination of the investigation papers submitted by the police.

“A comprehensive review of the investigation papers found that there is sufficient evidence to bring charges against the individual,” the statement said.

Section 295 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both. Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 provides for a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.

Earlier, the 21-year-old student from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) was remanded for four days after a complaint was lodged by his father regarding the Threads post. – March 2, 2026
