Man United v Brighton LIVE: De Cuyper completes incredible turnaround as Seagulls win Carabao Cup thriller

Manchester United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup in historic fashion as they left slip a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at Old Trafford to Brighton.

The Red Devils capitalised on six Brighton changes and a switch in formation as they swept to a 2-0 lead thanks to quickfire goals from Shea Lacey and Mason Mount in the first half. But from there Brighton took the ascendancy and looked by far the better team. The Seagulls have scored the most goals in the Premier League this season and they showed why as Charalampos Kostoulas pulled a goal back just before the half-time break.

That goal was followed quickly by another one as Pascal Gross scored his customary goal against United to level the match before Maxim De Cuyper fired home the winning goal moments after coming off the bench.

The defeat was United’s first one in 50 years when having a two goal lead at Old Trafford and it sees them dumped out of the Carabao Cup and increasing the pressure on Michael Carrick to turn around their poor start to the season.

Plenty of fans stuck around at Old Trafford to boo the players as they walked off the pitch.

It’s another horrid defeat for Man Utd who have let slip a two-goal lead to be beaten by the Seagulls.

Brighton deserved it in truth and it’s a defeat that shows once more how far away from the elite Man Utd are.

Man Utd 2-3 Brighton

21:43 , Mike Jones

84 mins: Brighton are just so much better than Man Utd.

They’re slicker on the ball, more accurate in passing, better at pressing and visibly have more desire to win.

United won’t get back into this game. It feels more likely for Brighton to score again.

Gomez takes a shot from just inside the box and forces a stop out of Darlow. The Seagulls should have this game wound up.

Man Utd 2-3 Brighton

21:40 , Mike Jones

81 mins: Into the last 10 minutes and United have increased the tempo.

That Rashford chance will haunt him though unless he gets another one.

78 mins: Do Man Utd have the urgency to get themselves an equaliser?

They need to pile the pressure on Brighton now and overturn much of the momentum in this game.

Huge moment.

Man Utd 2-2 Brighton

21:28 , Mike Jones

68 mins: There is some real pressure on Michael Carrick now. The Man Utd manager needs to guide his team out of this mess they’ve created for themselves.

He decides to make some changes and takes off Andrey Santos, Benjamin Sesko and Shea Lacey.

In their place come Bryan Mbeumo, Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo.

Pascal Gross again

21:26 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Pascal Gross again.

“He scored both of Brighton's goals when they ruined Erik ten Hag's first game in charge.”

GOAL! Man Utd 2-2 Brighton (Pascal Gross, 65')

21:25 , Mike Jones

It’s that man!

Brighton have their equaliser. Vuskovic wins a header ahead of Sesko and nods it forward into the path of Gross.

A deserved goal from the Seagulls.

It could be a long 30 minutes for the hosts if they keep this up.

Man Utd 2-1 Brighton

21:14 , Mike Jones

54 mins: A misplaced backpass almost allows Sesko to nip in with a sight of goal but Steele is quickly out of his area and leaps at the ball beating the forward to it and ending the chance of United scoring again.

Brave goalkeeping and it paid off.

A bad Lewis Dunk?

21:12 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Tielemans' wayward long-range shot brought chants from the Brighton fans that he is just a bad Lewis Dunk - or words to that effect - after their captain's spectacular goal at Coventry on Sunday.”

Half-time! Man Utd 2-1 Brighton

20:48 , Mike Jones

45+3 mins: The whistle goes to end the first half and after a blitz of goals from Man Utd, Brighton have been the better team.

They’ve certainly been more threatening and that have a goal to show for it.

The attacker takes a touch to control the ball and then slots it past Darlow to put Brighton on the board.

Game on!

A test for Santos and Tielemans

20:45 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

This is shaping up as a big test of the partnership of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

“It really didn't work at Hull and Santos was then dropped.

“Now Brighton have got on top. Sooner rather than later, Carrick could do with Santos and Tielemans working as a duo.”

Brighton still manage to pick out Gross on the left side of the box but he lifts his effort over the top!

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:37 , Mike Jones

38 mins: Chance!

Brighton should have one back. Yalcouye makes a great run past Ayden Heaven and receives a lovely pass from Pascal Gross.

Yalcouye dribbles into the box, opens up the right side of the box and shoots only to force the effort wide of the far post.

He needs to challenge the goalkeeper there at the very least!

Brighton have arguably been the better side

20:35 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Brighton have arguably been the better side since the second goal.

“Just wondering if their troubles in the first 10 minutes were a case of trying to get used to playing with a back three, as well as all the new personnel, after making six changes and giving three players first starts for the club.”

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:34 , Mike Jones

35 mins: Boscagli might be one Brighton player getting a little frustrated.

He receives the ball in space 30-yards or so out from goal and decides to have a go.

It’s not a bad effort but he pulls it wide of the right-hand post.

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:32 , Mike Jones

32 mins: Manchester United’s record when leading 2-0 at Old Trafford is superb.

In 145 such games they have never lost with 143 of those matches ending in wins and the other two being draws.

That’s a good sign for the home supporters who are watching an increasingly confident Brighton swing crosses into their team’s penalty area.

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:30 , Mike Jones

28 mins: Brighton have come back into this match brilliantly.

They’re not allowing Manchester United to get on the ball and it’s becoming a battle in the middle of the pitch.

The Seagulls are winning it and there’s pressure increasing on United’s defence.

Can Brighton break through?

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:25 , Mike Jones

25 mins: Brighton win themselves a corner and whip the ball into the middle of the box.

Man Utd have been shaky at defending set pieces this season but the ball is played too high and flies over everyone’s heads before going out for a goal kick.

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:23 , Mike Jones

22 mins: Mazraoui is back on his feet and is limping on.

He’s not moving particularly well but seems like he can run off the knock.

Michael Carrick looks to be pondering substitutes on the side of the pitch.

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:19 , Mike Jones

19 mins: Mazraoui is down and looks in pain after launching himself into a crunching tackle on Costinha.

Both players go to ground but it’s the Man Utd left-back who comes off worse.

There’s a pause in proceedings as he receives some treatment.

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:16 , Mike Jones

16 mins: United are now moving the ball with confidence. Big sweeping switches of play and testing passes into the middle of the pitch.

Brighton aren’t giving this up though, they’re still pressing and have introduced a bit of physicality into the game.

Man Utd 2-0 Brighton

20:14 , Mike Jones

13 mins: What a start from Manchester United.

They needed it after the performance at the weekend and this Brighton team are no pushovers.

The two early goals will settle the hosts down but they can’t ease off the gas or else Brighton will bounce back at them.

An uplifting couple of minutes

20:13 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

No JJ Gabriel, but it turns out United have other teenage wingers.

“A terrific way for Shea Lacey to score his first United goal.

“After a wretched few days for United, a very uplifting couple of minutes.

GOAL! Man Utd 2-0 Brighton (Mason Mount, 10')

20:11 , Mike Jones

Another one!

Rashford and Mazraoui earn this goal with their high press as they win the ball just outside the box.

Rashford weaves it into the area and shoots but Steele sticks out a leg and deflects the ball into the path of Mason Mount.

Mount wastes no time and fires his shot into the ground where it bounces over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net!

 (AP)

GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Brighton (Shea Lacey, 8')

20:09 , Mike Jones

Wow!

Shea Lacey opens the scoring with a blinding goal for Manchester United.

The hosts fly forward through Marcus Rashford who leaves the ball to Mazraoui before easing into the box.

Mazraoui slips a pass to Tielemans on the outside of the area and he’s encouraged to shoot by the watching fans. He doesn’t and instead picks out Lacey in the box.

Lacey rolls the ball onto his left foot and fires it past Jason Steele to send the hosts ahead!

 (PA)

Man Utd 0-0 Brighton

20:06 , Mike Jones

6 mins: Now then, Shea Lacey gets to a loose ball and flies up the right wing to drive the home side forward.

He comes up against two defenders and stutters before slipping a pass inside to Youri Tielemans.

United’s promising move doesn’t develop further and Brighton recover possession.

Man Utd 0-0 Brighton

20:04 , Mike Jones

3 mins: Karl Darlow’s first real involvement in the game sees the Welshman come flying off his line to punch the ball away as Brighton whip a free kick into the box from the left side of the pitch.

Confident goalkeeping from United’s No.2 who will be looking to impress tonight after signing during the summer.

Kick off! Man Utd 0-0 Brighton

20:01 , Mike Jones

Brighton get the ball rolling at Old Trafford and send it back to Jason Steele.

He fires it long and the ball squirts out to Diogo Dalot who is playing right-back tonight.

That means Noussair Mazraoui is over at left-back for the hosts.

Man Utd v Brighton

19:55 , Mike Jones

Alright then, it’s almost time for kick off and the players are making their way out onto the pitch at Old Trafford.

This isn’t an easy match for Man Utd and they’ll need to be on top form if they are to triumph over a confident Brighton tonight.

Can they do it? Let’s find out, kick off is up next...

The real reason behind Man United’s bad start to the season

19:51 , Richard Jolly

A week earlier, after an earlier Sunday that brought disappointment for Manchester United, Michael Carrick reacted to a suggestion his side had made a poor beginning to the campaign. “We haven’t started the season that bad,” he replied.

They have now. The Manchester derby can carry an importance that extends beyond points. Just ask Carrick, whose win on his return in January helped catapult him from caretaker to permanent manager.

The real reason behind Man United’s bad start to the season

A perilious game for United?

19:48 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

This does seem a particularly perilous game for United.

“Brighton have won at Old Trafford in each of the last four seasons and have already knocked them out of a cup competition in Manchester in 2026.

“Since then, Brighton have re-signed Pascal Gross, who always scores against United.”

Will United win trophies under Carrick?

19:42 , Mike Jones

Michael Carrick avoided questions over Man Utd’s future while he was the interim boss but he has been discussing what success looks like for the club.

“For me, trophies are the beauty and the feeling of winning,” he explained.

“It’s what we’re in football for, what we’re in sport for. It’s certainly what I’m at this club for – to try to win. It’s not straightforward, and you decide you want to win and you go and win.

“Of course not. But it’s important. I think trophies and achieving things and giving supporters that feeling of emotion of that is important, definitely.”

Should Brighton be favourites?

19:36 , Mike Jones

A quick glance at bookmakers sites will show that Manchester United are the favourites to win tonight’s clash against Brighton.

But should that be the case?

Brighton have begun the season in considerably better form than United and have won on four of their last five league and cup visits to Old Trafford.

Expect goals?

19:24 , Mike Jones

There have been at least three goals in six of the last seven meetings between these two clubs.

Brighton have scored the most goals in the Premier League this season (13) while Manchester United’s attack have the second highest xG behind only the Seagulls.

Should we expect a few goals tonight?

Yasin Ayari to shine?

19:18 , Mike Jones

Could Yasin Ayari be the man to break down Man Utd and lead Brighton to the next round?

The Sweden international scored Brighton's fifth goal at Coventry on Sunday and averages 2.7 shots per 90 minutes in this season's Premier League.

Can he transfer that form into the cup competitions as well?

Sesko to prove useful

19:12 , Mike Jones

Michael Carrick has tended to leave Benjamin Sesko on the bench this season but he could turn to the forward for tonight’s match with his team in need of a win.

The striker has scored in seven of his last 11 Old Trafford appearances including January's FA Cup defeat to Brighton.

Brighton's attacking prowess

19:06 , Mike Jones

Brighton are ahead in all attacking metrics in the Premier League this term, scoring the most goals (13), creating the most xG (10.2) and big chances (19) and averaging the most shots on target (6.0) per game.

Only Chelsea (4) have scored more than Brighton's three set-piece goals, and with that an area Man United continue to struggle in it could be an ideal area to attack from tonight.

Michael Carrick demands Man United use derby ‘injustice’ as fuel for Carabao Cup

19:00 , Mike Jones

Michael Carrick hopes Manchester United can harness the frustration from Sunday's costly derby defeat to reignite their stuttering campaign when they host Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

After restoring optimism and securing Champions League football last term, the atmosphere around Old Trafford has soured following a sluggish start that has yielded only four points from four Premier League fixtures.

Youri Tielemans captains Man Utd

18:56 , Richard Jolly at Old Trafford

Youri Tielemans captains Manchester United in just his sixth appearance for the club, as Bruno Fernandes gets a rare rest.

“He is promoted above Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot, who have almost 700 United appearances between them.

“There are first starts for teenage winger Shea Lacey and experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow, a first of the season for Mason Mount and a first since the opening day since Andrey Santos.

“But there is no JJ Gabriel, who was in line to debut had he not asked to leave.”

United players 'pushing to play'

18:42 , Mike Jones

Man Utd lost 1-0 to Man City on Sunday despite having a advantage of an extra player for three quarters of the game.

The United boss, Michael Carrick, said: "Sunday's Manchester derby was extremely frustrating for a number of reasons but now we have to move on quickly and get back to winning ways.

"The fixtures are coming thick and fast ahead of the international break next week; we have a squad full of talent with everybody pushing to play.

"As a group of coaches, players and staff, we want to play as many games as we possibly can this season, so we need to progress through matches like this one and make sure we keep competing on every front.”

Man Utd surprised by Gabriel's request

18:36 , Mike Jones

JJ Gabriel has left Manchester United surprised with the news that he wants to leave the club.

The 15-year-old is being tipped as the next great product from the United youth system but now wants to become a free agent by giving United formal notice to cancel his registration with the club.

United were planning to include him in their squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton and have been left bemused by the reason behind him wanting to leave.

They also feel as though the situation can be resolved.

Carrick's injury update

18:24 , Mike Jones

Michael Carrick gave an update in the build-up to tonight’s match on some of the players who are injured.

“Amad is not quite close, in terms of days, you know," Carrick said.

"We’ll see as the week progresses but Matta [De Ligt] is just working his way back really. So I don’t want to, because of the timeframe on it, and how it’s been, I don’t want to really put too much of a timeframe on it.

"Luke [Shaw] could. He could possibly be fit for Brighton but we’ll see. It’s not clear cut but it’s a matter of a few days rather than anything else."

Brighton have belief and confidence says Hurzeler

18:18 , Mike Jones

“We are still early in the season. We don't take these things for granted,” Fabian Hurzeler said when assessing his team’s next run of games.

“We should understand that we are in the situation from doing the basic things right. We should stay very humble. I think that's a big value for me and the team. So we keep working hard, keep doing the basic things right. That's the main message.

“We should also have this belief in ourselves, have this confidence in our quality that we can go to any place in the league and compete.

“And now we have two big games ahead of us before the international break, and we take that belief into both of them.”

Brighton hold a big threat

18:12 , Mike Jones

Across four matches in the top flight this season Brighton have scored 13 goals and are leading the way in terms of goals netted - Chelsea are second with 10.

The manager also spoke about why he thinks his team are excelling in the final third of the pitch.

“I mentioned at the beginning of the season that it's not about having one good goalscorer. It's about having this flexibility of having many goalscorers, of having a lot of players who have the desire to score,” he explained.

“And if you have the desire to score, then you can score from all different positions. So it's all about sacrificing things and making these runs into a box. I think that's also a mindset thing.”

 (PA)

Hurzeler reacts to Coventry win

18:06 , Mike Jones

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler was impressed by his team’s victory over Coventry last weekend but admitted that the performance was not ‘complete’.

“I wouldn't say complete. I think part of the truth is that we had a good goalkeeper,” he reflected.

“We had in certain moments a little bit of luck that Coventry didn't score. But overall we had a good balance between controlling the game in possession, having good structure in possession, and keeping our defensive stability.

“I think the chances they had were after set pieces, were after second phases. But for that we had a great goalkeeper, and the other part too is that in the right moment we scored the goals and we had the momentum on our side. What was positive, of course, is a clean sheet.

“What was positive is that we had this desire to score, we had this hunger to keep going and that overall makes a good performance.

“But we also understand we have to be very humble and shouldn't take these things for granted.”

Manchester United vs Brighton

17:30 , Mike Jones

Manchester United will look to put derby misery behind them as they kick off their Carabao Cup campaign against Brighton.

The Red Devils succumbed to a controversial loss to rivals Manchester City on Sunday and while Erling Haaland’s wrongly-given goal stole the headlines from Old Trafford, Michael Carrick’s men nevertheless put in a dismal performance as they failed to make their man advantage count after Phil Foden’s first-half red card.

With just four points from their opening four games, United will hope for a change of fortunes against the Seagulls, who knocked them out of the FA Cup on home soil last season.

Brighton come into the third-round tie off the back of a thumping 5-0 win at Coventry and have started the campaign in fine form.

Good evening!

15:21 , Mike Jones

Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of tonight’s Carabao Cup action which sees Manchester United host Brighton in the third round of the competition.

Michael Carrick’s side haven’t had the best start to the season, and lost the Manchester derby on Sunday, so they will want to impress and advance in the cup in a bid to build some momentum.

Brighton, meanwhile, are playing with confidence and come to Old Trafford on the back of a 5-0 hammering over Coventry. The Seagulls are in good and it would not be surprising if they were to progress tonight.
