The key Xabi Alonso decision that turned nine-goal thriller in Chelsea’s favour against Leeds

  • Chelsea staged a dramatic second-half comeback at Stamford Bridge, scoring four goals in just 12 minutes to condemn Leeds to a 6-3 defeat in the Carabao Cup third round.
  • The visitors had built a 2-0 lead shortly after half-time through Tarik Muharemovic and Brenden Aaronson against a Blues side showing nine changes from Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal. However, everything changed when Xabi Alonso introduced four substitutes at the break, led by Cole Palmer.
  • Palmer brought Chelsea level with two goals in two minutes – the first coming from the penalty spot – before fellow half-time introduction Pedro Neto completed a six-minute turnaround.
  • Danny Welbeck scored a fourth as substitute Morgan Rogers marked his bench appearance with three assists.
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck as Leeds sought to salvage what had been an impressive away performance, but Valentin Barco registered his first goal for the club to make it five. Welbeck then headed in a sixth in stoppage time.
