CNN Turk reports United are preparing to discuss terms with Kim in January.
The Napoli centre-back has been on the Red Devils' radar for some months, but Old Trafford officials have been put off by the price tag.
The South Korean international does have a release fee inserted in his current deal with the Naples club, but that is still thought to be in the region of £50m.
However, new speculation suggests that United are determined to sign the 25-year-old, and will do everything to make it work when the window reopens.
