Delhi Police on Tuesday said they have arrested a man and his wife accused of murdering the man’s younger brother, in a case that came to light after the victim’s body was found dumped in a sack in west Delhi on April 4. The accused, Gopal and his wife Soma, alias Seema, are alleged to have killed 40-year-old Amit Kumar following a prolonged dispute over his alleged harassment of Soma.
Amit was found dead on April 4 after the Moti Nagar police received a PCR call about a foul-smelling white plastic sack near Rama Road. Inside, officers discovered a decomposed male body with the legs tied using a mobile charger cable. Doctors concluded that the cause of death was homicidal.
With the victim initially unidentified, police launched a large-scale investigation. A tattoo reading “Amit Kiran” on the victim’s arm proved to be a key lead, following which more than 200 hue and cry notices were issued and CCTV footage from over 300 cameras across the NCR was examined.
Investigators traced an e-cart allegedly used to transport the body and recovered forensic evidence from a rented house in Loni, Ghaziabad. The accused had allegedly vacated the premises soon after the incident, changing hideouts across Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The police said the couple was arrested on June 15 following technical surveillance and intelligence inputs.
Soma has been remanded in judicial custody, while Gopal has been sent to police custody.
