MANILA, Philippines— A 32-year-old passenger bound for Manila was intercepted at the General Santos International Airport after authorities discovered a .22 caliber revolver inside his backpack.
Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup) operatives reported that the firearm was detected during airport X-ray screening manned by Office for Transportation Security personnel on Tuesday, September 15, at the Departure Initial Security Screening checkpoint.
During the subsequent physical inspection, the man failed to present the necessary legal and registration documents required for possessing the firearm. This led to his immediate arrest, after which he was brought to the airport police station.
Police said that the passenger faces charges for violating Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.
Avsegroup Director PBGen. Dionisio B. Bartolome Jr. said that security teams will continue to tighten protocols in all airports to prevent the entry of dangerous items and ensure the safety of the traveling public.
