THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority on Tuesday, Jan. 20, led the groundbreaking ceremony for the redevelopment of Plaza Azul in Pandacan, Manila, which will be converted into a senior citizens’ park and a pet park under the Metro Manila "Green Green Green" program.
The project is a joint effort of the MMDA, the Manila city government, and the Department of Budget and Management.
It aims to transform the underused space into a public park with green areas, recreational facilities, and community spaces.
Plaza Azul will have open lawns, a children’s playground, outdoor fitness equipment, a jogging path, a senior citizen pavilion, a basketball court, a multi-purpose court, a park pavilion, and areas for community events.
The redevelopment also plans a dedicated space for pets to play safely.
“This project promotes the concept of nature-based solutions, such as using natural methods to grow trees and plants through the collection and use of rainwater. By applying these approaches, the project seeks to reduce maintenance costs while supporting environmental sustainability,” MMDA Chairman Don Artes said.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said the redevelopment will benefit both residents and pets.
“It will surely benefit the community and residents of Manila, especially senior citizens, by providing a safe and accessible space for socializing, relaxation, light exercise, and cultural activities, while also enhancing local businesses, community pride, and overall well-being and helping pets stay active, reduce stress, and develop social skills in a secure, fun environment,” he said.
DBM Undersecretary Goddess Hope Libiran said the project complements broader efforts to promote sustainable and eco-friendly development in Metro Manila.
