
MANILA, Philippines — The late president Manuel Quezon's 148th birth anniversary was commemorated on Wednesday.
The commemoration was held at the shrine in the Quezon Memorial Circle in his namesake city.
Flowers were offered by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) together with others including the Quezon City Government and Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.
"In the opening remakes of NHCP Executive Director III Carminda Arevalo, she mentioned '...Quezon desired as part of the advancement of...social justice, that there be a place where the working class can live, study and work.'," the NHCP said on Facebook.
Quezon City Mayor Ma. Josefina Belmonte attended the commemoration. She introduced the guest of honor, Jose Sonny Matula, said the NHCP. Matula, a lawyer, is the president of the Federation of Free Workers and chairman of the Nagkaisa labor coalition.
A descendant of Quezon gave a message.
Quezon "is known as an advocate of social justice and his desire for there to be a place wherein the working class can live, study and work," the NHCP Museo ni Manuel Quezon said on Facebook. "Quezon City was created through Commonwealth Act No. 502 in 1939," said the museum which is located in the Quezon Memorial Circle.
