The 2026 FIFA World Cup dream is over for Uruguay after a tough 1-0 loss against Spain.
Following the defeat, Uruguay finished third in Group H with just 2 points to their name, which means that the South American nation have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking of the 1-0 defeat vs. Spain, there were many questionable decisions taken by head coach Marcelo Bielsa, including subbing off superstar Federico Valverde in the second half.

Marcelo Bielsa reveals reason for subbing off captain Fede Valverde
In a do-or-die game, most teams will want their captain and superstar to play the full 90 minutes. However, Bielsa seemingly didn’t care about that as he sent Valverde to the bench in the 57th minute of the second half.
After the game, Bielsa did offer an explanation for the controversial decision, per insider Fabrizio Romano on X.
“I subbed off Fede Valverde as I wanted more presence in attack,” Bielsa said.
Bielsa brought on Federico Vinas in place of Valverde, but the decision did nothing for Uruguay as they still failed to score against the Spanish defense.
Fede Valverde led a rebellion against Marcelo Bielsa’s training methods before Spain clash
In hindsight, it feels like coach Bielsa was trying to prove a point by subbing off team captain in the most important game for the country in 2026.
Prior to the game, a plethora of reports emerged about Valverde leading a coup against Bielsa’s rigorous training methods.
“The dressing-room crisis began with players who are indispensable in Bielsa’s starting eleven, such as Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur.
“Both are said to be among the main driving forces behind the meeting. Goalkeeper Sergio Rochet and Manuel Ugarte were also reportedly present in front of Bielsa,” MARCA reported.
“Their intention was to convey that his methods are not appreciated by the squad,” the report added.
Keeping these reports in mind, it’s not hard to connect the dots about Valverde getting subbed off in the second half vs. Spain. It doesn’t matter which side was correct, as Uruguay are heading back home after a disappointing WC campaign.
