MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday recognized the achievements of Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala and the Philippine women’s national football team, the Filipinas, during his State of the Nation Address (SONA), expressing hope that their success would inspire more young Filipinos to take up sports.
Speaking before Congress at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City, Marcos praised the overwhelming support Eala has received and said her accomplishments could encourage greater participation in sports.
“In our overflowing support for Alex Eala, hopefully many will be encouraged to learn and play not only tennis but other sports as well,” the President said.
Eala recently climbed to a career-high world No. 28 after a breakthrough campaign highlighted by her stunning fourth-round victory over defending champion Iga Swiatek at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.
Marcos welcomed Eala in a special homecoming ceremony at Malacañang on July 13 following her historic Wimbledon run.
The President also lauded the Filipinas for securing a historic berth in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, marking the country’s second straight appearance in the global tournament after its debut in 2023.
“Taking the example of the Filipinas women’s football team, I hope football becomes even more popular in our country and that many more people play the sport. Someday, the Philippines might even qualify for the World Cup,” Marcos said.
The Filipinas booked their place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, continuing the momentum of Philippine women’s football on the international stage.
