
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday expressed sympathy and solidarity with the people of Venezuela following a series of devastating earthquakes that struck the South American nation.
In a statement, Marcos said he was deeply saddened by the disaster and extended the Philippines' heartfelt condolences to those affected.
“On behalf of the Filipino people, I extend our heartfelt sympathies,” he said in a statement posted online.
“The Philippines stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan people during this difficult time and hopes for the safety and swift recovery of all communities affected,” he added.
The temblors which had magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, hit an area west of the capital of Caracas, and could be felt as far away as Bogota, Colombia. At least 32 people were killed while hundreds were injured.
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, it is yet to receive reports of injuries or casualties among Filipinos there.
There was no immediate announcement on whether the Philippine government would extend humanitarian assistance to Venezuela.
