Marcos inspects drainage improvement work in QC

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday led the inspection of a drainage improvement project in Quezon City as part of the government’s flood mitigation initiatives ahead of the rainy season.

Marcos, along with Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon and local officials, checked the G. Araneta Drainage Improvement Project, one of the city's critical flood-prone areas.

“We are checking the measures we are implementing to mitigate flooding,” Marcos said in English and Filipino following the inspection.

The chief executive witnessed the pipe-laying works that will channel rainwater from G. Araneta Avenue toward the San Juan River.

The project features the installation of large high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, upgraded water inlets, and improved outfall structures to increase drainage capacity and ensure fast flow of water during heavy rainfall.

He also observed the operation of a temporary pumping unit deployed to expedite the drainage of floodwaters into the San Juan River.

Funded with almost P500 million under the Fiscal Year 2024 General Appropriations Act, the project began in March 2025 and is now 96.75 percent complete as of May 18, with full completion targeted within the month.

Located near Talayan Creek and the San Juan River, G. Araneta Avenue is notoriously known for having one of the worst flooding during the monsoon season.

“This is one of the critical areas; that's why we're here. But it is not the only place where we are doing this kind of intervention to make sure that we find a way to release the water so that it doesn't flood too much,” the president said.
