MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday led the inspection of a drainage improvement project in Quezon City as part of the government’s flood mitigation initiatives ahead of the coming rainy season.
Marcos, along with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon and local officials, checked on the G. Araneta Drainage Improvement Project, one of the critical flood-prone locations in the city.
“As you know, we’re here at G. Araneta Avenue, we are checking the measures we are implementing to mitigate flooding,” Marcos said in English and Filipino following the inspection.
“These are the strategies we are employing… This is just one of them. We are doing a lot around Metro Manila and throughout the Philippines for flood control,” he added.
The G. Araneta Drainage Improvement Project spans 758 meters from Kaliraya Street to E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue and includes the installation of two 1.50-meter-diameter HDPE pipes beneath the roadway, supplementing the existing 0.91-meter-diameter drainage line beneath the sidewalk.
Located near Talayan Creek and the San Juan River, G. Araneta Avenue is notoriously known for having one of the worst flooding during monsoon season.
“This is one of the areas that are critical, that's why we're here. But it is not the only area where we are doing this kind of interventions to make sure that we find a way to bring the water – to release the water so that it doesn't flood too much,” the president said.
